House Committee on Science
From the U.S. House of Representatives. In the next century, it is imperative that the United States of America maintain and improve its scientific, technical, and engineering base to sustain prosperity, meet the challenge of new ideas, and ensure a better quality of life for future generations. Notwithstanding the projections of budget surpluses, competition for scarce federal discretionary resources by competing interests requires Congress to stress the fundamental importance of federal science programs to the nation. In this fiscal environment, it is the view of the Committee on Science that funding for basic scientific research should take precedence over activities better conducted by the private sector, which tends to focus more on short-term, applied research.

Scientific American
Here, on the World Wide Web, we are creating a new publication that pushes Scientific American into the frontiers of publishing in an electronic medium.
(I really like this site. It has their very first issue from 1845. Even then, one of the articles dealt with environmental issues such as, did you know that -- "An invention, which promises to be one of great utility, has been recently made by Mr. J. P. Dempfil, a French gentleman, of much scientific talent..." ? See if you can find out what that invention was...)
